CLEVELAND - Traditional skin or blood allergy testing are tried and true and generally help determine what causes an allergic reaction.
Now, a special type of blood test is allowing doctors to more accurately diagnose what someone is allergic to.
Michael Benninger, M.D., of Cleveland Clinic said component testing can bring peace of mind to folks with life-threatening allergies, like peanuts.
“There are a number of different proteins in the peanut that cause allergic response, but there are only three of them that cause the really bad anaphylaxis response,” said Dr. Benninger. “If you test for those and you test for all the proteins and you’re not allergic to those three, then you can be at least be exposed to peanuts; you can be in a room with peanuts and not have to worry about something terrible happening.”
Component allergy testing is done by analyzing specific molecules or proteins in the blood that can cause an allergic reaction and has been used selectively by allergy specialists for a few years now.
Dr. Benninger said component testing can help refine what’s causing someone’s allergies and allows doctors to better tailor treatments.
It also helps people understand exactly what they’re allergic to so they can avoid it.
According to Dr. Benninger, a traditional allergy skin or blood test may reveal generally what someone will react to, whereas the component test will uncover the primary allergy.
For example, a traditional skin allergy test may reveal that someone tests positive for two different weeds, resulting in avoiding and being treated for allergies to both weeds.
However, the component test may find that the primary allergy is just one of the weeds and treatment can be refined.
Dr. Benninger said component testing can even play a role in managing some of the most common allergies, like dogs.
He said dogs have five or six proteins that cause allergies and one of them is a prostate protein – which is only found in male dogs.
“Forty percent of dog allergic patients, or about 40 percent, are only allergic to that one protein,” said Dr. Benninger. “So, what you can do in that, if you really want to have a dog and you’re allergic to dog, if you test negative for that one, or positive for that one and for nothing else, you can get a female dog and not have an allergic response.”
Dr. Benninger said component testing is still in its infancy and currently done selectively by allergists treating people with life-threatening allergies. However, he expects it to become more common over time.
