CLEVELAND - Just about every home in the U.S. with a baby or a young child is full of nursery products such as infant strollers, carriers or bouncers.

Every day, emergency room doctors see injuries from such products that range from something as minor as a scratch, to something as catastrophic as a death.

According to Purva Grover, M.D., a pediatric emergency physician at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, crib bumpers pose a high risk for suffocation, despite the fact that many stores still sell them.

“Even if the child is younger, and they’re not scooting around yet - this might be the first time they turn – and when they do, they can actually impinge and suffocate and we’ve seen that and it happens and it can happen to anyone,” said Dr. Grover.

A recent study looked at nursery product-related injuries between 1991 and 2011 and found that since 2003, these injuries appear to be on the rise.

From 2009 to 2012, nursery products were the leading category of children’s products recalled in the U.S.

Researchers found that injuries were most common from baby carriers, cribs and strollers.

Dr. Grover said injuries from crib mobiles are fairly common. The small strings can cause lacerations or can even be a strangulation hazard if the child is able to stand up in the crib and reach them.

And while doctors will often recommend the use of a humidifier for congestion, she pointed out that cool air versions are safer, because children can get burned by a warm air humidifier.

Dr. Grover also said that it’s important that all swaddling sacks or blankets do not come up high enough to cover a baby’s neck, to avoid the risk of suffocation.

Another source of injury is the removable car seat - and it’s not always because of a car accident or a defect in the seat.

“What happens is, this busy mom is rushing out the door with a little toddler, this car seat, and she forgets her car keys and she puts the child’s car seat - on the table or on the chair, for this one quick second, she turns around, and that’s when the kid can rock and can fall,” said Dr. Grover.

Dr. Grover said the most important thing to remember is that nothing replaces supervision.

She said it’s important to check all products for recalls, read all of the instructions and take the safety advice seriously. Most products come with a registration or warranty that will automatically alert the purchaser to a product recall.

If something becomes broken, it might not seem like a big deal, but it needs to be closely inspected.
