CLEVELAND - Everyone knows how stress can affect their mood and often their food choices, but can long term stress actually make us gain weight?
A recent study says it’s quite possible.
Leslie Heinberg, PhD, of Cleveland Clinic did not take part in the study, but said the results show a connection between the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol and weight.
“People who had higher BMI’s had higher levels of cortisol, and people who had higher waist circumference, kind of carrying their weight in the middle, also had that higher level of cortisol,” said Dr. Heinberg.
Cortisol is a hormone that is secreted by the adrenal glands and it tends to ramp up during times of stress.
Researchers compared the stress levels and body weight of more than 2,500 men and women over the age of 54. They examined locks of hair for cortisol over a two-month period.
The study is limited because researchers only looked at two months of cortisol data, and according to Dr. Heinberg, cortisol levels can fluctuate greatly throughout the course of the day.
She said that back when humans had to run away from wild animals and storms, increased cortisol was a useful mechanism, but today stress is more chronic and over time it can wreak havoc on our bodies.
Dr. Heinberg said that the link between stress and weight gain is real, mainly because healthy habits like getting a good night’s rest, exercise, and eating a healthy diet, are harder to keep up when we feel like we’re maxed out.
She said the study is a good reminder for people to not let their health go to the back burner when they feel stressed out.
“Things like exercise, meditation, mindfulness exercises, relaxation; those are ways that we can work towards good stress management, but also good weight management,” said Dr. Heinberg.
Dr. Heinberg said there is really no way to know from the research if the stress experienced by the participants was a result of being overweight, or if being overweight was a result of stress. She believes it is most likely a combination of the two.
